Federal Republic of Peoples Democratic Party of
Nigeria: The Need for a Credible Opposition.
By Prince Charles Dickson
Jos, Plateau Nigeria.

   September 20, 2004

 Peoples destructive, deceptive, dying, undemocratic,
dangerous Part are amongst the many names I have used
at different occasions to describe Africas Largest
Party as it claims. Not that I have any qualms to that
assertion. The largest sleeping giant should naturally
be home to the biggest.

However my concern for this piece is the nation
herself. Nigeria is gradually turning into a
democratic pariah state, with only one party and the
others. The inability to distinguish between the Pdp
and the government of Nigeria is a grave concern to
me. Our case in party politics and governance is now
like

The chemistry teacher, who was performing an
experiment with a class. He mistakenly spilled some
acid solution on a students hand. When the student
cried out, other teachers rushed in only compound the
problem. The Mathematics teacher was busy calculating
the ratio of the injured part, while the English
teacher was writing an essay about the incident. The
Biology teacher was naming the injured parts. The
Account teacher was preparing a credit note on the
waste of acid. The Fine Arts teacher was sketching the
affected hand and the Economics teacher was screaming
on the need to economize the remaining acid for the
next experiment.

Nigeria is the student and the various teachers
display the different faces and antics the PDP
represents to this nation.

One does not know exactly where the PDP stops and
where governance of this nation starts, as of the last
elections over 20 something parties participated one
way or the other, even those that ended up not
presenting candidates still collected money from PDPs
Independent National Electoral Commission INEC. Lets
not loose the fact that the average Nigerian is aware
of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, All Nigeria
Peoples Party ANPP, Alliance for Democracy AD, and the
others.

With strongholds in certain parts of the north, the
ANPP has excelled. But with the marriage of concession
entered between the PDP and AD which today sees only
Lagos as the surviving son of that arrangeme3nt is
pathetic, dont forget that the party now is home to
two factions, two chairmen each holding claim to the
party is just a pity.

Why are my concerned? I am concerned because of the
unhealthy trend this development holds for the future
of our democratic experiment. The non-existence of any
form of viable opposition in any democratic situation
is grave for the system.

The other day the controversial steward of the FCT
Mallam el-Rufai goofed when he said government
policies cannot be questionednot strange given the
very dictatorial backing he has got from the high to
act as hatchet man to those disobedient to the party.
Many times I have tried to convince myself that we are
in a democratic setting, but with statements such as
no going back on this and that, this and that
must, that cannot, and this is final. I get
scared of the direction we seem to be taking.

Very recently the lord of PDP, chief Tony Anienh said
the government would provide 10million plus jobs, that
is no news, from PAP to NEEDS, but the authority with
which he said it, not that the government run by the
PDP but that the government. The typical PDP arrogance
of the man who once told the entire Nigerians that Aso
rock was not vacant pre 2003 elections.

Much, as I do not subscribe to the proliferation of
Political Parties. I strongly believe that a party
like the ANPP has a right to be dominant in certain
areas just like a hundred and one other parties:
provide service and governance in line with its
campaign promises, especially within the confines of
the practice of Federalism.

Not the trash we have now, landslide, earthquaking and
ocean moving victories of one party from local state
to federal level. Validating the theory of sheepish
followership: a situation where we are made to
understand that in a village of 200, all 200 dummies
simply voted the lead sheep PDP no dissenting voice.

Like the movie under production called 2007, I have
been forced to say I would vote the National
Conscience Party if only to voice an opposition.
Marwa, IBB, Atiku, Odili et al in contention for the
only one goalkeeper team shirt in the PDP. Are there
no other parties?

Mr. Fix it, Tony Anienh, now a demigod said that Uncle
Sege would be the one to chose his successor, only
added another insult on the face of the generality of
Nigerians. My only consolation is the fact that we all
know the man is an unknown quantity. Nevertheless his
comments in the light of fraudulent party machinery is
not one to be taken for granted. The same Tony as
Minister of works (idleness) and housing
(homelessness) prophesied the landslide we saw in
2003.

The way taxpayers monies are deployed in the schemes,
manoeveurs of the PDP structure leaves much to be
desired from the opposition. To say the least it is
shameful as we daily see how the Abuja Dogs of the
PDP have exhibited federal mighty against puppies at
the lower levels of government.

The public confusion that is called zoning of the
presidency at the moment is an entirely PDP thing. Who
said that another qualified Yoruba cannot be President
come 2007 if he is voted in by popular vote, if he is
the product of another party.

Are we running the constitution of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria or PDPs? Outright killing of the
opposition by any and all means necessary is the motto
of the ruling party; its a sorry tale, the cultism
that the PDP has brought upon the nation. The Okija
shrine bestseller, the Ngigegate episode, looting via
due process is most disturbing. Those who comply in
the opposition are compensated and those who refuse
are killed by armed robbers.

On the Plateau crisis, hear retired and tired Air
Commodore Jonah Jang, if the President has called on
me to come and repair the damage that has wrecked the
PDP in the state who am I? Politics without morale.
Jonah Jang in A five year period has been to and fro
PDP, ANPP and now on a rescue mission to PDP.
In a forum I had said that the average Nigerian
politician will most likely be a member to an average
of three political parties and as many minor ones.
This same Jang was a Trustee Board Member, he moved to
ANPP, now he is on the move. What manner of people!
What manner of nation!

Afe Babalola, a man whose legal acumen I do not
doubthas showed nothing short of moral bankruptcy as
regards our political field. Though in law the carrots
dictates the dance, yet I do see how the same man
handling all most all PDP briefs, and then handling a
prime AD case against a PDP governor.

The opposition in Kenya may not have done better than
Arap Moi, but the strength in resolve and character
showed is one that can be emulated. That the
Republicans are in power in the USA, does not in
anyway belittle the stiff fight the Democrats provide.
And lets not loose fact that the Republican may have a
thrust in governance, but it is entirely different
from the US government policies which is a function of
ruler, oppositions and the ruled.

Very few politicians have passed credibility tests as
regards the business of opposition, the Ganis
Soyinkas, Balarabe Musa and their likes have helped
despite their sometimes nuisance valuebut that is the
beauty of participatory democracy.

Each occasion the Conference of National Political
Parties has tried to step up to the podium, they are
cowered down by the Peoples Democratic Nigerian Police
and its agents.

The every day growing arrogance of the PDP only sails
the Nigerian ship to the concentration of power in few
hands, thereby the increase in deprivation,
domination, marginalisation and alienation of the
masses.

Thew idea of crush the opposition is not strange I
think maybe because the word opposition is strange
to the African vocabulary, what we have is enemy.
Which is demonstrated in thuggery, arson, and all
forms of bloodletting.

With the track being followed the term multi-party is
gradually becoming an alien term.

The need to sit and restructure the membership of the
Board of Directors of this Company called Nigeria is
of great importance or else. Not that I predict doom
but lets \make haste while the sun shines on us.
