There is no love lost between the President, myself and the entire Nigerians of this sleeping giant called Nigeria. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is not new. With caution, to state that I hate him may be like sounding callous. However I understand that if you do not love a person then obviously you sure do hate the person. Maybe I should use a safer phrase, I am indifferent, but the truth is how can I remain indifferent to a man whose inconsistency is ruining the lives of millions of Nigeria. A man who is supposed to have brought succour, focus and strength through the provision of quality leadership, but on the contrary has given untold hardship, entered into marital bliss with poverty and made certain that poverty is encrypted in the everyday lives of the ordinary Nigerian. I have been asked if the President stole my wife I answer again No! My grief stems from his five-year failure so far. I once had respect for this President especially given the fact that he had once ruled. And was supposed to come and tackle the problems we had with almost first hand knowledge, I thought he was going to perform like a man on performance enhancing drugs but the man in bush can only but be a bushman. The ranting above is not my subject matter, so kindly pardon me for boring you out of line. I just had to state the obvious to disabuse your mind that I just hate the President for no just course. To my piece proper, Owu is a sleepy town in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Not long ago it joined the GSM race with network reaching the area. The last annual Owu day festival was concluded amidst crisis rocking the little town over the selection of a replacement for the stool of Olowu of Owu. Youths reportedly went on rampage on that day. Over a year now the town had been without traditional leadership, as the former Olowu, Oba Adisa Odeleye went to join his ancestor. As always as the case is in most part of Nigeria Plc succession is always a knotty do or die affair. Baba Sege being the Balogun of Owu, naturally is one of the king makers, after the scatter, scatter that followed the first selection process last December 2003, which resulted in the matter getting to the courts, the election was cancelled after a certain Prince Adetayo Fadairo supposedly won. Naturally these things happen but what shook me was the ungentlemanly deeds of Mr. President which was widely reported in national dailies (not that the President had ever been a gentleman at anytime). The President TORE the result sheet. At the Olowus palace in Oke-Ago in Owu, the selection process was held and when it became obvious that the Presidents man was loosing out, my President allegedly snatched the result sheet and to pieces he tore it. Ironically the same Prince Fadairo was on the verge of winning the stool again, flooring a Chief Sanya Dosunmu, the Presidents man. President or no president I strongly believe that Obj has a right to be involved in matters that affect his community especially as a High Chief further more I am of the opinion that he has a right to also be favourably disposed to a particular candidate. That is exercising his freedom of choice. However he should have done this within the confines of being rational. In the usual manner, the Presidency has responded. Though it did not deny or confirm the action of the President, in the plenty worded response from Baba he claimed that the selection committee had compromised their positions and were in support of a candidate, he stated that the screening was unfair to other candidates. In a straight sentence that the committee was biased. But Mr. President, I am sure that was not enough reason to warrant the shredding of result. I am pressed to disbelieve the six aggrieved chiefs but the president did not debunk his act, rather three of the chiefs were arrested after the Owu day celebrations by idle mobile policemen in a commando style as usual and put behind bars. Orders were from above, quickly the President denied a hand in it and insisted that the CEO of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniels or the Commissioner of Police in the State should be asked. Though they have been released on bail. A lame excuse was given by the police, that the men were picked for Public disturbance and inciting Owu youths who went on rampage destroying properties of prominent personalities in support of the President. Before this, a meeting of reconciliation arranged by the State Governor was held at the Presidents Otta Farms home. After which the President came out telling the Public that the issues had been resolved, what he however did not tell us is that none of the aggrieved chief attended the peace parley. Not that one expected a different story, one of the dramatis personae, Chief Sanya, claimed the selection was inconclusive and that the President only suspended the election. The President should at all times know the import of the office he holds, much more than this is expected from him, heaven knows, but so far the President has only acted like the man removed from the bush yet still with a residue of plenty bush inside of him. |
